Laparoscopic Cervical Cerclage

Cervical incompetence is a condition where the uterine opening is weak enough to hold the pregnancy till full term and lead to repeated second trimester abortion and preterm labour. Traditional vaginal method of sterilisation is not very effective as it is very difficult to apply the stiches at the right site.

Laparoscopic cerclage is a relatively new and more effective treatment option to prevent premature deliveries and abortions or at least carry on pregnancy till the baby becomes viable. Laparoscopy offers the benefit of reduced blood loss, reduced postoperative pain, and fewer adhesions, as well as decreased length of hospital stay and overall faster recovery time. Similar to the transabdominal approach, laparoscopic cerclage can be placed during pregnancy or as an interval procedure.
