What are Fibroids?

Fibroids are abnormal growths that develop in or on a woman’s uterus. Fibroids are the most common tumrs of female pelvis and most of them are noncancerous. Fibroids are also known by the following names:

  • Leiomyomas
  • Myomas
  • Uterine myomas
  • Fibromas

How common are fibroids?

Fibroids are mostly age related. The incidence of fibroids increases with age. They are seen less commonly before the age of 30 and more than half of the women above 50 years will have fibroids.

What are the causes of fibroids?

The exact cause of fibroids are not known. However Estrogen hormone secreted by the ovary is responsible for causing fibroids. Fibroids may run in the family. If your mother, sister, or grandmother has a history of this condition, you may develop it as well. African-Americas are more prone to develop fibroids and usually present with multiple fibroids. A high body weight has a higher chance of development of fibroids.

What are the symptoms of fibroids?

More than half of the fibroids are without symptoms. and the others present with symptoms like

  1. Menorrhagia (Increased bleeding during periods)
  2. Dysmenorrhea (Pain during periods)
  3. Lower abdominal pain
  4. Lump or feeling of tumor in the lower abdomen
  5. Subfertility/ Infertility is an uncommon association

What are the different types of fibroids?

  1. Subserous & Subserous pedunculate
  2. Intramural
  3. Sub-mucous

Submucosal fibroids are mostly symptomatic and also interferes with conception and pregnancy. Subserosal fibroids are usually without symptoms and large size can cause pressure on urinary bladder, rectum and may cause abdominal tumor.

How are fibroids diagnosed?

  • The best initial diagnosis is made by pelvic examination by your gynaecologist.
  • Ultrasound (USG) is very informative in establishing the diagnosis of fibroids. High resolution USG can detect the size, location and other important informations about the fibroids.
  • Pelvic MRI: MRI is more informative in certain cases when the USG is of limited informations.

What are the treatment options for fibroids?

  • Observation only
  • Medical/ non-surgical
  • Laparoscopic Myomectomies
  • Laparoscopic Hysterectomies

Treatment option depends on the following factors

  • Age
  • Symptoms or presenting complains
  • You marital status (married or unmarried)
  • Parity (whether you have kids or not)
  • Sub-fertility/ infertility
  • Desirous of pregnancy (whether you are trying for pregnancy now or not)

Can fibroids be cancerous?

The chances of fibroids becoming cancerous is very less. The possibility of cancer in fibroids is upto 1 in 350 t0 1 in 400. The risk of cancer is higher with advanced age, large size, rapid growth or increase in size, radiological evidence of increased mitotic activities and degenerative changes and raised blood level of LDH. However only expert opinion can decide making the right decision.
